Vegan French Toast Using an Iron

How to make French Toast using an iron

Getting ready in the morning always seems so leisurely in my head than when the shrill cry of my alarm clock jolts me awake.

Dreams of reading a magazine as I enjoy a cup of coffee and lush, maple-syrup-drenched French toast shatter from my mind after I’ve hit the “snooze” button five times, leaving me frantically trying to find matching clothes before darting out the door.

Until now.
How to make French Toast using an iron

Thanks to my new friend, the iron, I can get ready WHILE my French toast heats up. Keeping an eye on it as I change and rake through my hair really isn’t so challenging after all.

Finally, a relaxing start to the morning is mine! And I don’t have to wake up hours early and mess up the kitchen in the process. Victory!

NOTE: This dish is ‘eggless’ because I don’t trust that the iron can thoroughly cook the egg, and I don’t want to worry about salmonella and other bacterial issues.

Utensils required: bowl (for dipping bread), measuring cups, aluminum foil, baking sheet, iron

Ingredients (makes about 4 slices):

  • 1 cup vanilla soy milk
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • sprinkling of cinnamon (about 1/2 teaspoon)
  • Bread slices
  • Cooking spray

Steps:

1. First, turn the iron on to its highest setting (typically cotton/linen) and set it aside so it’s not touching anything.

2. Stir together the soy milk, flour, sugar and cinnamon in a bowl.

3. Next, place a sheet of tin foil on top of the baking sheet. Lightly coat the entire sheet of foil with cooking spray.

4. Grab a slice of bread and submerge it in the ‘batter.’ Take it out and place it on the tin foil. Then, wrap the tin foil around the bread like you would wrap a sandwich for lunch.

5. Place the foil-wrapped bread on top of the baking sheet, then gently set the iron on top of it. Leave it there for about 2-3 minutes.

6. Using a towel or oven mitts (since the foil will be HOT), carefully flip the wrapped bread over, and let the iron toast the other side for another 2-3 minutes.

7. Take off the iron and check on the bread: If it looks very lightly toasted, turn off the iron, plate the toast and drizzle on some syrup so you can dig in. If it’s still completely gooey, toast it for another minute or so on each side (some irons aren’t as strong as others).

NOTE: Don’t leave the iron unattended. Also, make sure you let it cool down before you dash out the door!
